India Franchise Exhibitions : Things To Do Before, At, After Visiting The Franchise Expo

Firstly, we attend a franchise exhibition to view and compare a variety of franchise business possibilities. The idea is to see what options are being showcased and whether any of the businesses make for an interesting case. You must be absolutely clear that exhibitors at the primarily want to sell their franchise systems. Be cautious of salespersons who are interested in selling a franchise that you are not interested in.

Initial Research and Primary Questions:
Before you attend, research what type of franchise best suits your investment limitations, experience, and goals. When you attend, specifically choose the opportunity that best suits your needs and then engage the franchiser.

Your Investment Levels:
We have often seen clients saying that they could arrange the funds depending upon the opportunity at hand. Infact, a clear understanding of how much you can invest and in what time period would help you immensely on zeroing on the right type of options within these investments. An exhibitor may tell you how much you can afford to invest or that you can’t afford to pass up this opportunity. Before beginning to explore investment options, consider the amount you feel comfortable investing and the maximum amount you can afford. If you need to arrange funds externally or are seeking financial help for balance amounts, be very clear of the procedure and the time involved in clearing the formalities, as the franchiser might not be willing to wait for too long.

The Right Business For Your Profile:
Whats the right business. How can you pre-define one, before knowing what options are on hand. An exhibitor may attempt to convince you that an opportunity is perfect for you. Only you can make that determination. Consider the industry that interests you before selecting a specific franchise system. Ask yourself the following questions:

Have you considered working in that segment/line of work before?
Can you see yourself engaged in that line of work for the next ten years?
Do you have the necessary background or skills?
How will your family, friends, society perceive you within that business? Is that acceptable to you.If the industry does not appeal to you or you are not suited to work in that industry, do not allow an exhibitor to convince you otherwise. Spend your time focusing on those industries that offer a more realistic opportunity.

Maximise Selective Options
Visit several franchise exhibitors engaged in the type of industry that appeals to you. Listen to the exhibitors’ presentations and discussions with other interested consumers. Get answers to the following questions:
Who are the promoters of the business and whats their background?
How long has the franchisor been in business?
How many franchised outlets currently exist?
Where are they located?
How much is the initial franchise fee and any additional start-up costs?
How will you make money? How much? Whats the pay out to the franchiser?
What management, technical, and ongoing assistance does the franchisor offer?

Why Should You Meet The Franchiser After The Expo:
If you feel an opportunity is really to your liking, the best thing to do, is to just tell the franchiser about your seriousness and to schedule an appointment after the show. Most exhibitors are exhausted and have monotonous answers by the middle of the day. Keep the discussion short, meet them after the show and you will see that they will appreciate your wisdom and approach. Exhibitors may also offer you prizes, free samples, or free dinners if you attend a promotional meeting later that day or over the next week to discuss the franchise in greater detail. Do not feel compelled to attend. Rather, consider these meetings as one way to acquire more information and to ask additional questions. Be prepared to walk away from the sales pitch if the franchise does not suit your needs at any stage.

Return On Investments and Profitability:
Some franchisors may tell you how much you can earn if you invest in their franchise system or how current franchisees in their system are performing. Be careful. Make sure you ask for and obtain written substantiation for any income projections, or income or profit claims. If the franchisor does not have the required substantiation, or refuses to provide it to you, consider its claims to be suspect. Also make a careful analysis of the market in which the franchise is going to operate and try matching it with a similar location within the franchise network.

Make Notes, Take Photographs and Collect Direct Numbers:
We have often seen entrepreneurs taking photographs of the exhibitors. It may be difficult to remember each franchise exhibit. Bring a pad and pen to take notes. Take the franchise marketing kits, franchise marketing leaflets, franchise documents or other promotional literature that you can review. Take the exhibitors’ business cards along with the details of the exact person along with their direct numbers, so you can contact them later with any additional questions.

Take It First Franchise Sales Pitch:
You may be told that the franchisor’s offering is limited, that there is only one territory left, or that this is a one-time reduced franchise sales price. Do not feel pressured to make any commitment. Legitimate franchisers expect you to take time and to investigate their offering. A good deal today should be available tomorrow. Just let your franchiser know that you are serious about the opportunity and are taking the required time to research and decide.

Initial Payments:
We have at times, seen entrepreneurs going to the franchise shows with their cheque books. It is never advisable. Do not sign any contract or make any payment at the franchise exhibition, until you have the opportunity to investigate the franchisor’s offering thoroughly. Take time to speak with current and former franchisees about their experiences. Because investing in a franchise can entail a significant investment, you should have a franchise lawyer/ franchise consultant to review the franchise documents and have an CA to review the company’s financial projection. A experienced franchise consultant can play a very vital role for you at this stage. Take professional help.

Hence you must follow all of the above to buy a reputed franchise business through a franchise exhibition or else, you might end up taking up a franchise that’s not to your liking or is different inside, whilst the cover page looked very interesting at the franchise expo.

Toshiba Looks at 80 Exclusive Franchises Across India

Toshiba India Private Ltd. is planning to embark on an aggressive marketing blitz to drive its laptop business and garner a bigger pie in the Indian market. The move comes even as Toshiba is celebrating the silver jubilee of its laptop invention.

In an interaction with The Hindu, N. Sivakumar, General Manager (PC Division), said Toshiba had lined up an investment of $10 million this year. The money would primarily go into brand building, dealership expansion and strengthening of product portfolio.

He said Toshiba had now a share of four per cent in the Indian laptop market. Efforts were on to scale this up to 12 per cent by the end of this year, he added. With this focus in mind, Toshiba, he said, had decided to expand its dealership network to 850 from the existing 600. This would comprise 80 exclusive franchises who would be hawking only Toshiba products. Also, the company would expand its product offering to 30 models from the current eight.

“We will be offering products in the price range of Rs. 23,000-75,000,” he said. Wu Tengguo, Director (PC Division), said the generation next in India and other emerging markets unfortunately was not aware of Toshiba brand when it came to laptop. Therefore, the challenge lay in spreading the awareness among this segment of the population about Toshiba laptop, he said. In India since mid-1990s, Toshiba laptops were viewed only as commercial products. In this context, Mr. Tengguo pointed out that Toshiba entered the Indian market on the back of a tie-up with HCL for B2B (business to business) sales. With the dynamics of marketing changing drastically, Toshiba had now decided to focus on B2C (business to consumers), he said. The company, he explained, would bring out products to capture new segments. It would also introduce new concept products, he added.

To a specific query, he said the Indian laptop needs were now serviced from Toshiba's plant in China.

Given the low penetration of personal computers in India and given also the size of the laptop market, Mr. Tengguo felt that Toshiba would, in the medium-term, drive its focus on expanding its market share in the Indian B2C space.

ZoomIn Studio is a service built for India, serving a Diaspora that is connected through memories and their celebration through photos”, added Sunny.

The project on offer is a higher education institution to impart UG and PG level Technology, Business and other professional courses on contemporary and sunrise sectors like fashion, lifestyle, retail, wellness, hospitality, aviation, etc.

The fundamental difference between this institution and thousands of others across the country will be its 100% goal will be to impart a very high level of professional skills through extensive hands on training and industry exposure to enhance the employability level much higher than its competitors.

Today, any institution’s success solely dependent on the success of its students which is measured by the placements and their career growth in sue course. The student community is very well aware about these and they always run for admissions in those institutions.

It takes just a year to earn 50% of such reputation when students are offered with excellent internships and only 2 years to earn 100% of it when students are being placed.

It has been just 8 years, I have moved from overseas from a global industry career to education management in India and just like my exceptionally result oriented global career of nearly 24 years, my tenure in education has been extremely successful. I have earned a national level reputation as an academician, as an academic leader and also as a outstanding profit center head.

I am looking for investor/s who are keen to get into this high profile, high profit and extremely safe as well as recession free industry. The return on investment in this industry is far more faster than most others and its most prestigious industry too.

The franchisee partner/investor should be able to invest between Rs. 5 to 10 crore based on which the project size will differ.

The uniqueness of the proposed institution is that it will offer UG and PG level technology, management and media related courses with the specializations which are not offered by the competitors and so its students will be much more employable than its competitors in the market.

There are many other areas which will make this institution unique in India such as Teaching-Learning culture, Pedagogy, Hands on and application oriented learning, longer industry internships, Technology usage, Global curriculum, larger ratio of industry professional faculty members, in-house technology and business incubation, etc. are just to name a few.

There are millions of finer details that makes this project the best of its kind in the country and like all my previous projects my Midas touch will make a great difference with guaranteed success.

The project has an expansion plan to set up 5 more campuses across the country within 4-5 years and there will be no more expansions of campuses in India to ensure continuity and quality. There could be overseas campuses in Dubai, Manila, Bangkok and Singapore in due course.

Raymonds Franchise Stores to Be Added This Year In More Than 100 New Locations Across India

Raymond to take franchisee route to open 100 stores

Mumbai:Friday 16 April, 2010, The Rs 1,200-crore Raymond Ltd is planning to open 100 retail stores through its franchisee network in tier-IV and V cities like Bijapur, Mandya and Bellary in Karnataka, and Ahmednagar and Bhandara in Maharashtra, among others, in calendar year 2010. This is more than the 76 franchise stores the company opened in 2009-10 with an investment of around Rs 25 crore.

The branded apparel and textile major currently has approximately 10 lakh sq ft of retail space across 520-odd stores. Of these, around 60 are owned by the firm.

‘The Raymond Shop’ stores stock exclusive Raymond brands, which include ColorPlus, Park Avenue and Parx. Around 450 are the company’s franchisees. Retailing contributes 49% to the company’s overall revenues.

Raymond president (retail & business development) Rakesh Pandey said: “We are opening 100 stores through our franchisee network in tier IV and V cities by the end of this calendar year.” He added that the revenues from these stores are expected to be around Rs 30 crore.

The total revenue from the retail business could not be ascertained because some of Raymond's brands are produced by its subsidiaries, and will only be available in company’s annual balance sheet.

Last week, the company launched a ‘made-to-measure’ store at Palladium, located in the famous Phoenix Mills mall in Mumbai. The store is a 500 sq ft area, which mainly offers custom fits of garments.

In fiscal 2009, Raymond operated with a same-store-sales (SSS) growth of 7% and closed its third quarter with a total income of Rs 375 crore. The Raymond group has around 12 subsidiaries, out of which Raymond handles the textiles, engineering and aviation businesses. Other subsidiaries include Raymond Apparel Ltd, ColourPlus Fashion Ltd, EverBlue Apparel Ltd and Silver Spark Apparel.

Last October, the company CMD Gautam Singhania had announced an investment of Rs 100 crore to open about 300 stores across the country by end-March 2011 as part of Raymond’s expansion plans.

Budget 2010: What it brings to the franchise industry

With most of the market signals remaining positive with Union Budget 2010-11, consumer is happy being at the center stage of consumption story and is in a better position than a year ago. However, challenges remain. Read on to know what is in platter for for the SMEs and franchise industry.

Franchise industry has been looking forward several regulatory as well as policy reforms to facilitates its growth. A positive GST outlook by government and rise in threshold for tax compliances has been seen as a very positive move by the franchise industry. However the long impending demand of abolishing dual taxation on the franchise services has been clearly ignored by the policy makers. Presently both service tax as well as VAT are imposed upon the franchise services which distorts the franchise model completely.Morover service tax on rental proceed further makes deters the profitable feasibility. In all it has been the budget has been moderately favorable for the franchise industry. Gaurav Marya ,President, Franchise India Holding Ltd shares’’ The budget 2010-11 brings a reasonable assortment for small retailers as well as franchisors. While increased income tax exemption limits will certainly boost consumption, imposing service tax on rental property distorts retail business models by making the accessibility of retail spaces precipitously expensive, hence making it unviable to sustain profitably.'

According to D P S Kohli, Chariman, Koutons Retail India Ltd, ‘Overall, it has been a mixed budget for us. New tax slabs and rates have been introduced which would offer 60 per cent relief to the tax payers providing them with greater disposable income. This would provide the necessary boost to consumer’s spending a pre-requisite to unleash the true growth momentum of the retail sector.

In addition, reduction of surcharge on domestic companies that the finance minister has announced is sure to accelerate the expansion plans for the retail players at home. However, industry status continues to delude the retail sector. This is a disappointment since this is the first step towards reforming the sector and organising the highly unorganised sector. The hike in the excise duty is also not favorable for us since this might directly affect the quality of production.

Badrinath, Director, Accretive Global stated that the budget has both the shades of gray and white for the franchise industry he further explains detail implications

The good news
No change in service tax rates and the same continues at 10.3 per cent. The FM in his budget speech states that this proposal is “to maintain the growth momentum and also to bring about a convergence in the rates of tax on goods and services.”
Small businesses stand benefited on account of lower direct tax compliance costs. The threshold for having the accounts audited for tax has been increased from 40 lacs to 60 lacs. Further, small businesses with turnover/receipts lower than 60 lacs can also choose to be covered by the presumptive tax system. The threshold earlier was only 40 lacs.

The frequency of remittance of central excise is extended to quarterly basis from the current scheme of monthly payments for units operating under the SSI Scheme.
As a welcome step, exemption from 4 per cent special additional duty of customs is granted to mobile phones, watches and garments imported in pre-packed condition for retail sale.

The not so good news
The FM has retrospectively amended the provisions relating to levy of service tax on renting of immovable property. The judgment of the Delhi High Court in the case of Home Solutions Retail is negated by making mere renting of immovable property liable to service tax.

Further, much against the industry expectations, the FM has retained the CST at 2 per cent and the base rate of excise is increased from 8 per cent to 10 per cent.
The FM has extended service-tax on health check-up services provided to employees of a business-entity or persons covered under health-insurance-schemes if such payment is made by the business entity or insurance company. This is likely to increase the cost of healthcare services. However, if carefully managed, the franchisee in this sector could claim credits of service tax paid on various input services such as renting of immovable property and franchisee fee which is currently adding to the cost of the operations. This could reduce the net price impact for the end consumer.

As the franchise industry brings with its surge innovative new franchise business models to tap the potential of Indian consumption, it also demands a favorable ecosystem which can be realized by necessary monetary policy reforms.

Here is how we compile this mega-list--the first, best and most comprehensive franchise ranking in India. The process began in November 2009, when we asked franchisors to participate in this year's survey. Each submission was vetted before being entered for data analysis, with 164 companies making the first cut. Of those, the top 100 companies made the Franchise 100 ranking, based on franchisee satisfaction and profitability.

Geetanjali Mehlwal, a legal expert and an experienced franchise veteran said that, 'India Franchise Rankings is a much needed initiative that will benefit everyone in the franchise industry in India as well as provide foreign franchisors with a fair idea about the performance of the Indian franchise industry'

All companies, regardless of size, are judged by the same criteria: objective, quantifiable measures of a franchise operation. The most important factors include financial strength and stability, growth rate and size of the system. We also consider the number of years a company has been in business and the length of time it's been franchising, start-up costs, percentage of terminations, and whether the company provides financing.

All the factors are plugged into our proprietary methodology, with each eligible company receiving a cumulative score. The 100 franchises with the highest cumulative scores become the India Franchise 100. Remember that the India Franchise 100 is not intended to endorse, advertise or recommend any particular franchise. It is solely a research tool you can use to compare franchise operations. MFV India stresses that you should always conduct your own independent investigation before investing money in a franchise.
