Are You Seeking A Pie In The Growth Of Franchise Industry In India.

Though franchise companies represent a small portion of all US business, the franchise industry is big. In the United States, there are over 2,500 franchise systems, with more than 534,000 franchise units, which represent slightly more than three percent of US businesses. Yet that small percentage generates 35 percent of the retail and service revenue in the U.S. economy.

With franchise-related products and services estimated at $800 US billion annually, international demand for franchise brand name products and services is creating huge opportunities for American companies to expand overseas.

India, which has a growing middle-class of over one billion people, is now positioned as a major force in the global economy and fertile ground for investment in retail and business development. The franchising industry in India is expected to grow at an annual rate of 30 percent, and to drive the country’s current $330 retail sector even higher. In 2007, more than 750 national and international franchisors were operating in India, employing millions of people, and generating revenues in excess of $3 US million.

The industries cited as the top prospects for successful franchise opportunities in India include:

* Food and beverage

* Education

* Apparel

* Entertainment

* Courier Services

* Stationery and gift shops

* Health and beauty

* Fitness and nutrition

Many of the world’s largest and well-known franchise companies, such as UPS India, McDonald’s, Yum Brands, Baskin Robbins and Subway already have a visible presence in India. Other US companies, from diverse industry sectors, are now gaining a foothold too.

With India’s retail sector growing at more than eight percent a year, The Dollar Store is actively seeking franchisees. This retail chain, based in Florida, USA, sells low-priced general merchandise products and services. India is just one of the geographical areas targeted for the company’s multi-million dollar overseas business expansion.

And there are some surprising entries to franchising in India too, which at first glance, might not seem like a logical fit with traditional Indian culture and consumers.

Contours Express launched its first Indian center in Bangalore, with a second location in Mumbai. The company has 700 fitness centres for women in the U.S and additional locations across 24 countries, and plans to have at least 1000 Contours clubs operating around the world.

Pizza Corner aims to open 36 stores in India, and is extending efforts to expand in Sri Lanka, Nepal and Singapore.

Golf USA has grown to almost 100 stores in 32 states and 6 foreign countries; and is actively seeking entrepreneurs to operate stores in India.

According to statistics from the Franchising Association of India, franchises currently account for only two percent of retail revenues in India compared to almost 50 percent in the US. However, that two percent is growing at a fast pace, and the implications point to astounding market potential. The success rate for individual franchise business owners in the US is 92 percent, and since franchise businesses are based on proven systems, the success rate for Indian franchises should be comparable.

Franchising has a great future in India due to the convergence of many factors:

* The average Indian income is steadily rising and individuals have more purchasing power.

* Telecommunications and transportation infrastructure improvements facilitate the exchange of information and goods.

* Increasing levels of consumer spending, with greater recognition of brand value.

* Internet access is opening the world to India, making its population more aware of global trends and brands. And conversely, the Internet is making it easier for international companies to gain an understanding of India’ culture, geography and politics.

Raymonds Franchise Stores to Be Added This Year In More Than 100 New Locations Across India

Raymond to take franchisee route to open 100 stores

Mumbai:Friday 16 April, 2010, The Rs 1,200-crore Raymond Ltd is planning to open 100 retail stores through its franchisee network in tier-IV and V cities like Bijapur, Mandya and Bellary in Karnataka, and Ahmednagar and Bhandara in Maharashtra, among others, in calendar year 2010. This is more than the 76 franchise stores the company opened in 2009-10 with an investment of around Rs 25 crore.

The branded apparel and textile major currently has approximately 10 lakh sq ft of retail space across 520-odd stores. Of these, around 60 are owned by the firm.

‘The Raymond Shop’ stores stock exclusive Raymond brands, which include ColorPlus, Park Avenue and Parx. Around 450 are the company’s franchisees. Retailing contributes 49% to the company’s overall revenues.

Raymond president (retail & business development) Rakesh Pandey said: “We are opening 100 stores through our franchisee network in tier IV and V cities by the end of this calendar year.” He added that the revenues from these stores are expected to be around Rs 30 crore.

The total revenue from the retail business could not be ascertained because some of Raymond's brands are produced by its subsidiaries, and will only be available in company’s annual balance sheet.

Last week, the company launched a ‘made-to-measure’ store at Palladium, located in the famous Phoenix Mills mall in Mumbai. The store is a 500 sq ft area, which mainly offers custom fits of garments.

In fiscal 2009, Raymond operated with a same-store-sales (SSS) growth of 7% and closed its third quarter with a total income of Rs 375 crore. The Raymond group has around 12 subsidiaries, out of which Raymond handles the textiles, engineering and aviation businesses. Other subsidiaries include Raymond Apparel Ltd, ColourPlus Fashion Ltd, EverBlue Apparel Ltd and Silver Spark Apparel.

Last October, the company CMD Gautam Singhania had announced an investment of Rs 100 crore to open about 300 stores across the country by end-March 2011 as part of Raymond’s expansion plans.

Franchise Courses and Training Programme Launched By Indian Franchising Association.

A study by Indian Franchise Association

Bridging practical training gap would be the biggest challenge for education institutes post economic recovery

New Delhi, Delhi, March 31, 2010 /India PRwire/ -- New Delhi- April 1, 2010: Indian Franchise Association (IFA) has taken an initiative of launching India's first short term professional training courses on retail and franchising for MBA students and working executives. In India, 400,000 engineers graduated last year but only one in four of them was employable, rest could not make through due to lack of required technical skills, fluency in English, ability to work in a team or delivering basic oral presentations. Similarly the case with management education, hence the core objective of these training courses would be to make them employable. IFA has aggressive plans to promote short term professional training courses by establishing training centres in various parts of the country to educate students or professionals on the modalities of franchising and retail.

On certification courses introduction, Mr. Arvind Singhatiya, Head-Training and Content, Indian Franchise Association, said "It's indeed a landmark education initiative by IFA for management students and working professionals, as this will benefit them with expert training vis-à-vis seamless support for their placement in the burgeoning modern retail and franchise sector. We are in the process of tying up with B- schools, franchise companies and retail organizations to create a common podium for knowledge workers and seeking companies".

Commenting on the continuous demand in the market with an optimistic approach, Mr. Singhatiya further added, "Economy is bouncing back, this time in a big way; this will lead to an enormous demand of trained professionals and these training sessions are so tailored as to prepare students to meet industry needs and bridge the gap between education and practical training".

Experts agree that India's knowledge based economy needs dynamic and analytical knowledge workers who can become the motivating force for innovation and growth in this country. Professional training is need of the hour and it would add immense value if induced with the regular professional courses.

These short terms courses are one of their kind and a first step in India taken by IFA towards youth for them to understand fresh franchise business models and patterns adopted in the practical marketplace to excel in future for their growth.

India Franchise Rankings 2010 is an annual exercise aimed at encouraging franchise companies.

Despite there being several initiatives to award franchise brands, none of them have the a clear methodology on the basis of which they are ranked. The current awards gauge franchise recruitment progress and is where number and expansion driven, leaving behind a lot of more important parameters, no. of franchisee locations closed, franchisee profitability and success ratios.

The franchisee - entrepreneur of today complements the core Indian values of respect, freedom and hard work. Speaking on this occasion, Dhawal Shah, Founder of MFV India said, that, 'We are pleased to launch the inaugural India Franchise Rankings 2010. Today's franchisees and businessmen are always on the lookout for franchise and business opportunities, but are not aware of various companies. With our propreitory index, we have developed a methodology for evaluating and assessing India's leading franchise companies'.

Silvio Zannoni, one of the investors in Maverick Franchise Ventures, on this occasion said that, 'Our Partnership with Way2Franchise.com has been quite successful in helping us launch unique-first initiatives like the India Franchise Rankings, Similar to our online franchise portal in Italy, we will definitely see us increase our market share in India as well.

Since, November 2009, the MFV India Team has been constantly examining franchisors and confidentially surveying franchisees. Participation in the franchisee’s surveys is anonymous; franchisees receive codes for confidentiality. Some of them, that prefer to speak over the telephone are not asked for their identity or location. Here is how we compile this mega-list--the first, best and most comprehensive franchise ranking in India. The process began in November 2009, when we asked franchisors to participate in this year's survey. Each submission was vetted before being entered for data analysis, with 164 companies making the first cut. Of those, the top 100 companies made the Franchise 100 ranking, based on franchisee satisfaction and profitability.

Geetanjali Mehlwal, a legal expert and an experienced franchise veteran said that, 'India Franchise Rankings is a much needed initiative that will benefit everyone in the franchise industry in India as well as provide foreign franchisors with a fair idea about the performance of the Indian franchise industry'

All companies, regardless of size, are judged by the same criteria: objective, quantifiable measures of a franchise operation. The most important factors include financial strength and stability, growth rate and size of the system. We also consider the number of years a company has been in business and the length of time it's been franchising, start-up costs, percentage of terminations, and whether the company provides financing.

All the factors are plugged into our proprietary methodology, with each eligible company receiving a cumulative score. The 100 franchises with the highest cumulative scores become the India Franchise 100. Remember that the India Franchise 100 is not intended to endorse, advertise or recommend any particular franchise. It is solely a research tool you can use to compare franchise operations. MFV India stresses that you should always conduct your own independent investigation before investing money in a franchise.
